Wild Luxury: A Designer’s Guide to Wye River & the Otway Coast

Luxury ocean view from Wye River boutique beach house view

There is a specific rhythm to the Great Ocean Road—a hypnotic pulse of winding asphalt and crashing blue. But as you pass through the busier tourist stretches and pull into Wye River, the tempo changes. Here, the Otway rainforest doesn't just border the coast; it tumbles right into it.

Staying at the Months & Seasons Coastal House is an exercise in being present. Perched above the canopy with unbridled views of the Bass Strait, our home is a masterclass in coastal minimalism. It is rugged, it is wild, and it is perfectly quiet. Here is our curated guide to experiencing the best of the coast and the forest.

Friday Afternoon: The Horizon & The Ritual

Arrival at the Coastal House is about immediate immersion.

  • The Ritual: Drop your bags, open the floor-to-ceiling glass doors, and head straight to the deck. The air here smells of salt and damp earth. The view is breath-taking and instantly a step change from the city.

  • The View: Spend your first hour simply watching the horizon. Between the manna gums, you’ll likely spot local koalas and King Parrots who call our garden home.

  • Sunset Drinks: Pour a gin and tonic and watch the lighthouse beam at Cape Patton begin its nightly rotation as the sky turns to bruised purple.

Saturday Morning: Salt Water & Sourdough

The beauty of Wye River is its scale—everything you need is within a slow, scenic walk.

  • Breakfast: Walk down the hill to the Wye General. It is the beating heart of the village. Grab a coffee and a loaf of their famous sourdough, still warm from the oven.

  • The Beach: Head to Separation Creek beach for a more secluded morning. If the tide is low, the rock pools offer a designer’s dream of textures, colours, and marine life.

  • The Surf: If you’re a surfer, the point break at Wye is legendary, offering long, peeling rights that are world-class on their day.

Otway National Park hiking trails near Wye River

Saturday Afternoon/Evening: Into the Deep Green

While the ocean is the drawcard, the Otway National Park behind the house is the hidden treasure.

  • The Hike: Drive ten minutes to the Sheoak Falls trail. This is a spectacular hidden gem where the waterfall meets a hidden cave, surrounded by ancient, prehistoric ferns. It is the ultimate digital detox.

  • Wildlife Spotting: Continue to Kennett River. While most tourists crowd the entrance, we recommend walking further up Grey River Road for a quiet, authentic encounter with koalas in the wild.

  • Tonight, the best table in Wye River is on your own deck. Our house features a Städler Made Wood Fired Pizza Oven. There is something primal and deeply satisfying about stoking a real wood fire as the stars emerge over the ocean.

  • The Dinner: Use the ingredients you picked up at the Wye General to craft the perfect wood-fired pizza. The theater of the fire and the sound of the crashing waves below create an atmosphere no restaurant can match.

Sunday Morning: The Slow Return

Before you head back toward the city, take one last moment to breathe in the salt air.

  • Brunch on the Deck: A slow, alfresco breakfast as the morning sun hits the water.

  • The Stop: Drive back via Lorne and enjoy a delicious lunch at Totti’s or Ipsos. Stop at the Great Ocean Road Chocolaterie or grab a final pastry in Lorne to sweeten the journey home.
